Deemed as one of the prettiest and oldest communities in Southwest Ontario, Amherstburg is nestled on the shores of Lake Erie and the Detroit River, just a short 25 minute drive from the Windsor/Detroit border. Amherstburg is steeped in rich history such as The Underground Railroad, authentic War of 1812 sites, unique architecture, interesting museums and galleries and an array of cultural attractions.
Amhersturg is home to 3 National Historic Sites; Fort Malden, Amherstburg Freedom Museum and the Belle Vue House (1814). Eclectic shops and restaurants line the quaint, cobblestone streets in an olde world setting.
Experience riveting sunsets, breathtaking water vistas, natural conservation and fabulous public gardens. We even have our very own island to visit and explore! Once a meeting place for Chief Tecumseh, Boblo Island is a unique waterfront community boasting rare bird species and interesting fauna amongst an array of architectural gems!
We are the gateway to magnificent award winning wineries as you drive the scenic county roads amongst wildflowers and vineyards. Taste the “bounty of the county” which offers fresh local produce at farm fresh stands or choose to dine in one of our unique restaurants.
Amherstburg is on the move! Through progressive and thoughtful governance, the Town of Amherstburg continues to nurture and maintain its old world charm and hospitality. So much so, that in 2015, it was named “Canada’s great places to live; people’s choice award”, and continues to be the “safest community in Canada” deemed such by stats Canada.
In late 2016. The Town of Amherstburg purchased a 200 year old historic landmark. The Belle Vue House was deemed as one of the most endangered properties (9 acres) by the National Trust for Canada, however with this purchase, the house and property is now in the process of restoration for public use. In early 2017, another iconic property on the waterfront was also purchased for public use and enjoyment. We are thrilled to continue our cultural and heritage portfolio in preservation through the acquisition of these important properties.
Amherstburg continues to grow and develop so that residents and visitors alike are inspired by a sense of place that is conducive for a better quality of life and sustainability!
